  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We observed endophthalmitis due to Candida tropicalis in 2 cases aged 60 and 62 years each. One case had been under continuous hemodialysis for renal failure for the past 2 months. Endophthalmitis developed in both eyes. The second case underwentsubtotal gastrectomy for stomach carcinoma foll-owed by sustained intravenous hyperalimentation therapy (IVH). IVH had to be discontinued 3 days after surgery because of high fever. Endophthal-mitis in the left eye developed 4 weeks later.

Both cases manifested uveitis with whitish in-filtrating lesions in the retina. We treated both cases by pars plana vitrectomy. Candida tropicalis was cultured from the aspirated vitreous in both cases. Early vitrectomy is advocated for suspected cases of fungal endophthalmitis for correct diagno-sis and better visual prognosis.
