  • Look Inside

Bilateral fungal endophthalmitis developed in two males aged 21 and 47 years each. Both patients had a history of intravenous hyperalimentation following abdominal surgery. The affected four eyes were treated by vitrectomy. Serum levels of candida antigen and D-arabinitol were within normal ranges in both patients. No fungal organism was isolated from the serum or the vitreous aspirate. Fungal DNA was detected in two vitreous specimens in two patients by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) . The present cases illustrate the value of PCR on vitreous aspirates in the diagnosis of endogenous fungal endophthalmitis.
