We performed a collaborative study to evaluate the psychological peculiarities associated with glaucoma. A group of 31 institutions, including 19 university eye clinics, participated in the project. Patients were asked to fill 56 items in the question-naire sheet. Attending ophthalmologists were also asked to supply clinical data concerning the diagno-sis, visual acuity and perimetric findings amongothers. A total of 1,738 out of 2,189 filled question-naires were judged as eligible for final evaluation. A similar study covering 613 patients with cataract attending 15 institutions served as control.

Patients in early-stage glaucoma were character-ized by lesser optimism, depression and adherence, or inclination to worry about trifles. The moods of depression, adherence and angler increased along with progression of glaucoma. Patients with advanced visual impairments manifested, paradoxi-cally, transient increments in optimism.
