  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We determined the plasma electrolytes, carbon dioxide in the arterial blood and urine electrolytes in 32 glaucoma patients who had been treated with acetazolamide 250 mg daily or metazolamide 50 mg daily for 1 year or longer. We observed, as significant findings, metabolic acidosis with respiratory compensation and dissolution of bone salts.

We then treated 22 patients in the group withperoral Uralyt-U® which contains 2.4 mM citric acid and 4.8 mM each of citric sodium and potassium as daily dosis. This treatment was effective in preventing metabolic acidosis and dissolution of bone salts. The intraocular pressure was not affected.

We advocate routine check of serum bicarbonate and calcium ions in patients receiving carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, particularly in aged persons liable to osteopathy or chronic lung affections. Systemic Uralyt-U® promises to be of value in treating plasma electrolyte changes associated with prolonged carbonic anhydrase inhibitor therapy.
