  • Look Inside

We reviewed 73 cases which necessitated enucleation during the past 16 years through 1998. All the cases were unilaterally affected. The series comprised traumatic eyeball rupture 22 eyes (30%) , intraocular malignancy 22 eyes (30%) , infectious panophthalmitis 14 eyes (19%), irritable phthisis bulbi 13 eyes (18%) and others 2 eyes. There was no difference in the rate of causative lesions between the first and the second half during the 16 years except the recent trend to conserve the eyeball in diseases other than malignancy. All the 22 eyes of eyeball rupture were males. There was no gender difference regarding other diseases. About half of the patients received orbital implants after enucleation. Hydroxyapatite implants have been favored in recent years.
