  • Look Inside

We reviewed 9,506 new eye patients who visited either of 5 general hospitals in Nagasaki prefecture during a one-year period through March 1999. They accounted for 0.62% of inhabitants in the area. The male-to-female ratio was 46% vs 54%. The disease involved the lid or lacrimal tract 8.2%, cornea or conjunctiva 23.5%, the uveal tract 1.5%, the lens 25.6%, retina and vitreous 18.0%, glaucoma 3.8%, strabismus 1.1%, ocular tumor 0.4% and refractive disorder 9.5%. Cataract was the most frequent entity and diabetic retinopathy ranked as the top among retinovitreal disorders. The southern area was characterized by a higher incidence of cataract, glaucoma, ocular tumor and branch retinal vein occlusion. External and anterior eye diseases in the northern area of the prefecture.
