  • Look Inside

We performed macular translocation for subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in 25 eyes of 25 patients during the past 19 months. The series comprised 17 males and 8 females. Their ages ranged from 59 to 88 years, average 74 years. The size of CNV ranged from 0.5 to 3 disc diameters (DD), average 1.4±1.6 DD. Phakic eyes received phacoemulsification-aspiration. Postoperatively, the visual acuity improved by 2 lines or more in 8 eyes (32%), remained unchanged in 9 eyes (36%), and deteriorated in 8 eyes (32%). There were no significant correla-tions among preoperative visual acuity, postoperative visual acuity, and postoperative retinal circulation time. Besides cyclic diplopia in 10 eyes, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment developed in 3 eyes after surgery followes by prolifera-tive vitreoretinopathy in 1 of them. These 3 eyes received additional surgery. The findings show that macular translo-cation may be effective for CNV when it is maximally 3 DD in size.
