  • Look Inside

We evaluated the site of origin and course of short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs) in 128 eyes of 128 persons utilizing digitalized indocyanine green (ICG) angiography. The cases comprised 5 healthy volunteers, age-related macular degeneration 63 eyes, central serous chorioretinopathy 19 eyes, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy 2 eyes and others. We could identify the sites of origin of 497 SPCAs in 70 of 128 eyes. They were located around the optic disc and the posterior pole. They were symmetrically distributed on the horizontal line which was located between the two horizontal lines crossing the center of the optic disc and the fovea. Out of 497 SPCAs, 34 originated in the perifoveal area and ran towards the periphery. Only one SPCA supplied the subfoveal choroid. In another 5 eyes, SPCAs showed selective dye filling in the subfoveal choroid. In 2 eyes of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy with temporally displaced fovea, the SPCAs appeared as the same as in other eyes regarding their course and sites of origin.
