We measured the blood flow velocity in the central retinal artery (CRA) and posterior ciliary artery (PCA) in 35 eyes with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. A color doppler imaging was used in the measurement. Two hours after instillation of 0.5% betaxolol, there was no change in systemic blood pressures or pulse rate. The intraocular pressure decreased significantly. There were a decrease in puls-latility index and increases in maximum, minimum and mean velocities in CRA and PCA. The findings show that topiocal betaxolol shows vassorelaxant effects and improves the ocular hemodynamics in eyes with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
