A 39-year-old male was referred to us for hepatitis C. Both eyes were intact with full visual acuity. His right eye showed soft exudates when seen 24 days after he started receiving systemic interferon β twice for every day. When seen 51 days after start of interferon therapy, the visual acuity had decreased to 0.06 right and 0.02 left. Both eyes showed generalized soft exudates involving the macula. Fluorescein angiography showed nonperfusion in the perifoveal area with macular edema. Systemic interferon was immediately discontinued. Six weeks later, his visual acuity was 0.1 right and 1.0 left. His right visual acuity was still 0.5 when seen 14 months after initiation of interferon therapy. This case illustrates that visual impairment may persist following interferon retinopathy.
