In designing an intraocular lens with the capability of accommodation, it is essential that the substance refilling the lens capsule does not induce aftercataract. We evaluated the effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on the cultured bovine lens epithelial cells. The presence of PVA in the culture medium inhibited proliferation of lens epithelial cells. The effect was dose-dependent. PVA also suppressed intercellular adhesion. Immunohistochemical studies showed negative cor-relation between PVA concentration and cell proliferation. Flow cytometry showed absence of cytotoxicity of PVA on the lens epithelial cells. While there are uncertainties regarding the biocompatibility of PVA, PVA promises to be a candidate as refilling substance of the lens capsule.
