We quantitated the changes in blood flow volume in the retinal arteriole induced by artificially elevated intraocular pressure, IOP. Measurements were performed in 15 human eyes with macular hole or epiretinal membrane. They were free of retinal vascular disorders. We used an endoscopic laser Doppler flowmeter which measures the retinal blood flow in selected areas under direct observation. IOP was elevated from the initial level of 29mmHg to 52mmHg during vitrectomy. The blood flow in the retinal arteriole soon decreased to 60-80% of the original value. The pulse wave in the arteriole showed an abnormal pattern. These findings remained constant for at least 30 seconds during elevated IOP.
