We measured the length of the ciliary body in 78 eyes of premature babies at the mean gestational age of 41 weeks. Another series of 18 full-term newborn babies served as control. An ultrasonic biomicroscope, UBM, was used in the measurement. The distance between the iridocorneal angle to the ora serrata was defined as the length of the ciliary body. In full-term infants, the length averaged 2.97±0.22mm in the nasal and 3.38±0.17mm in the temporal horizontal line. The difference was not significant. In 46 eyes of premature infants without retinopathy, the value averaged 3.11±0.49mm and did not differ from the value in full-term babies. In 14 eyes of premature infants which underwent therapeutic photocoagulation, the length of the ciliary body in the nasal horizontal line was significantly less than in premature infants without retinopathy.
