  • Look Inside

We evaluated a series of 100 cases with penetrat-ing eye injury and ultrasonography record due to opaque ocular media. Ultrasonography revealed retinal detachment in 46 eyes, vitreous hemorrhage in 43 and proliferative vitreous changes in 39. No ultrasonographic abormality was found in 16 eyes, of which 13 eyes were examined within 14 days after injury. Retinal detachment increased in inci-dence when examined 15 days or later after injury.

A total of 73 eyes were eventually treated by vitrectomy. A good final visual outcome, or final visual acuity of 0.1 or more, resulted in 30 of 38 eyes (78%) with retinal detachment, and in 11 of 35 eyes (28%) with retinal detachment.
