Indocyanine green (ICG) angiography was performed in rabbit eyes with commotio retinae, atrophy of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), or choroidal vascular occlusions. Particular attention was paid to causative factors for enhanced or bright fluorescence and hypofluorescence. Disturbed choroidal circula-tion showed either the presence or absence of diffuse fluorescence in late-phase ICG angiogram. Choroidal artery occlusion with well-preserved choriocapillaris was characterized by delayed dye inflow and normal diffuse fluorescence in the late phase. Chorioretinal atrophy with occluded choriocapillaris resulted in hypofluorescence after middle phase on, suggesting that diffuse fluorescence in late-phase ICG angiogram reflects intact choriocapillaris. In vitro experiments showed that increased or decreased pigment in RPE plays a minor role in ICG angiogram. Contrary to fluorescein angiography, reflection from the sclera seemed to modify the ICG angiographic findings. Because of these different features, comparison of fluorescein and ICG angiograms would provide more detailed informations in chorioretinal lesions.
