  • Look Inside

Exfoliation materials were degenerated microfi-brils mainly of zonular fibers. Histochemical analy-sis using cupromeronic blue demonstrated that the exfoliative materials contained proteoglycans. From histopathological findings, it was concluded that exfoliation glaucoma was a kind of pigment-ary glaucoma causing degeneration of trabecularcells and consequent thickening of the trabecular sheets. Plasmoid aqueous due to endothelial cell degeneration of the iris vessels was another cause of increase in the intraocular pressure of exfolia-tion syndrome. Analysis of HLA revealed that DR4 and DQ4 were significantly lower among exfolia-tion syndrome group comparing to normal control group.

The present study indicated that exfoliation syn-drome should be regarded as a systemic disorder based upon abnormalities of fibroblasts and their products microfibrils.
