Abstract. Purpose:To report the characteristic features of glaucoma patients under 40 years of age. Method:This retrospective study was made on 265 patients who were diagnosed with glaucoma or ocular hypertension during the past 5 years. Results:The series comprised 159 males and 106 females. The age averaged 22.4±11.5 years. There were 148 cases(56%)of secondary glaucoma and 45 cases(17%)of developmental glaucoma,of whom detailed data were obtained on 62 eyes of 33 cases. Developmental glaucoma was of early onset in 10 eyes(16%),late onset in 36 eyes(58%)and was associated with other congenital anomalies in 16 eyes(26%). In late-onset type, glaucoma was detected by chance in 8 of 17 cases(47%). Serious visual failure was present in 6 cases(35%)at the time of diagnosis. Conclusion:Caution is necessary as glaucoma in persons under 40 years of age may be developmental.
