Abstract Purpose:Evaluations of intra- and post-operative results after cataract surgery for over 90 years super-elderly patients at Dokkyo Medical University Hospital.

Cases and Methods:This study was made on 50 eyes of 30 patients who is between 60 and 89 years old(the group of under 90)and 52 eyes of 32 patients who is over 90 years old(the group of over 90). The patients underwent cataract surgeries at Dokkyo Medical University Hospital. The grade of nuclear sclerosis, surgery time, averages of cornea endothelial cell, visual acuity of pre- and post-operation and intraoperative complications were evaluated retrospectively.

Results:The grade of nuclear sclerosis is significantly high in the group of over 90. The surgery times and complications showed no significant differences. The survival rate of postoperative cornea endothelial cells and postoperative visual acuity is significantly low in the group of over 90.

Conclusions:Cataract surgery for super-elderly patients is effective;however, the operators need to consider about hard nuclear sclerosis and risk of corneal endothelial cell loss.
