Abstract Purpose:To report investigation of refractive error after cataract surgery using three types of Haigis formula IOL constants provided from three facilities.

Cases and Method:This study was made on 217 eyes of 127 patients who received cataract surgery in the past 24 months. IOL constant of Haigis formula was calculated by asking Dr. Hill's website(Group H), TOMEY(Group T)and NIDEK(Group N)of 300 eyes data that were operated at our clinic in the past 4 years. Prospective refraction in same IOL power was calculated by Haigis formula using three IOL constants. Three groups were evaluated regarding subjective refraction in one month later after surgery.

Results:The calculated IOL constants(a0, a1, a2)were group H(0.670, 0.008, 0.177), group T(0.582, 0.010, 0.180)and group N(0.499, 0.150, 0.165). The mean of refractive error(absolute refractive error)in one month later after surgery was −0.04±0.43D(0.33±0.28D)(group H), 0.09±0.43D(0.34±0.29D)(group T)and 0.28±0.43D(0.40±0.31D). Both means were significant difference between the three groups(p<0.001, ANOVA). The ratio of refractive error within±0.5D and±1.0D one month after surgery were 79.7%, 96.3%(Group H), 79.3%, 96.8%(Group T)and 71.4%, 94.5%(Group N). Both means showed no significant difference between the three groups(p=0.071, p=0.444, Chi-squared test)

Conclusion:In calculating IOL constant of the Haigis formula, it was necessary to compare the calculated results from multiple facilities.
