Abstract Purpose:To present a report on medium-term outcome and complications of Baerveldt glaucoma implant in out clinic.

Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 41 eyes of 38 cases who received Baerveldt glaucoma implant surgery during a 42-month period and who could be followed up for 12 months or longer. The series comprised 32 male and 9 female eyes. There were 23 eyes with neovascular glaucoma, 8 eyes with secondary glaucoma, 3 eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma, 3 eyes with exfolication glaucoma and 4 eyes with other types of glaucoma. Intraocular pressure(IOP)was measured 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after surgery. Surgery was evaluated as success when IOP was between 5 mmHg and 21 mmHg 3 months after surgery, visual acuity was light perception or better, no additional surgery was necessary, and there was no serious complication as endophthalmitis.

Results:Cases were followed up for an average of 27.9 months. IOP before surgery averaged 36.1 mmHg. Averaged value of IOP remained between 12.5 mmHg and 14.0 mmHg and was significantly lower than the presurgical value. Four eyes resulted in no light perception. One eye each showed endophthalmitis, flat anterior chamber, incarceration of vitreous in the tube and baring of the tube. All these eyes required additional surgery. Rate of success was 75.3% when evaluated 2 years after surgery.

Conclusion:Surgery with Baerveldt glaucoma implant resulted in IOP control 2 years after surgery.
