Abstract. Purpose:To report the safety of irrigating solution containing moxifloxacin(MFLX)in cataract surgery. Cases and Method:This prospective study was made on 149 eyes of 111 cases who received cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation in the past 12 months. The series comprised 53 male and 96 female eyes. The age averaged 78 years. Irrigating solution containing 45μg/ml of MFLX was used during surgery. Another series of 72 eyes served as control that received surgery with balanced salt solution for irrigation. Cases were evaluated regarding corneal thickness, endothelial cell population, and foveal thickness before and one month after surgery. Results:Before surgery, corneal endothelial cell density averaged 2481±321 cells/mm2 in MFLX group and 2469±367 cells/mm2 in controls. There was no significant difference. One month after surgery, it averaged 2116±491 cells/mm2 and 2215±469 cells/mm2 respectively. There was no significant difference. No significant differences were present between the two groups regarding central corneal thickness or foveal thickness. Conclusion:Use of irrigating solution containing MFLX showed no adverse effect on the cornea or the fovea one month after cataract surgery.
