  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated a series of 36 eyes, 28 cases, of atopic dermatitis who underwent eye surgery in our department during the foregoing 6-year period. The series included 22 eyes, 16 cases, with cataract as the initial outstanding feature. In these 22 eyes, hypermature cataract was present in 7 eyes. Retinal detachment was detected in 3 of these 7 eyes after surgery. All the 3 eyes showed advanced prolifer-ative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Keratoconus waspresent in 7.

Retinal detachment was initially present in 14 eyes, 12 cases, in the series. PVR was present in 6 eyes during the initial surgery. All these 6 eyes were aphakic without intact posterior capsule. Surgery was successful in 2 out of the 6 eyes. The overall success rate was 10 out of 14 eyes (72%)

The findings pinpoint the necessity to be on the lookout for retinal detachment in cataractous patients with atopic dermatitis.
