  • Look Inside

Preserved sclera, when used as a homograftic material, is inert and endures for clinical use. We treated 2 cases of congenital eyelid coloboma by the technique of Z-plasty with preserved sclera. The preserved sclera, transplanted to the skinflap as lining material, remained in the site very well. It appeared as if the tarsal plate itself were grafted, since the sclera consists of packed collagen and is very similar to the tarsus in both structure and nat-ure. Mechanical ptosis did not occur post operati-vely, as there was no need to shorten the length of the eyelid in repairing the lid coloboma.
