  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We developed a new synthetic vitreous by irradiating polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution. A 7% aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol with an average polymerization degree of 2,000 and saponification degree of 99.5% was charged in glass ampules and sealed in vacuum. It was then subjected to gamma irradiation at 0.6 megarad.

Resultant, lightly crosslinked PVA-hydrogel was then purified by removing unreacted PVA and was brought to equilibrium swelling in physiological saline. The gel was transparentand had an appearance of egg-white. The swel-ling ratio was 115 (1g PVA : 115g hydrogel).
