Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of a survey concerning the situation regarding the introduction of a new medical fee for low vision care among ophthalmologists. Subjects and Methods:A questionnaire containing 8 items was sent to 264 ophthalmologists in Japan by e-mail. Results:Responses came from a total of 142 ophthalmologists(53.8%). Regarding the introduction of the new medical fee for low vision care, 78.2% of the respondents considered this to be good, 18.3% said they didn't know, and none of the respondents considered this to be bad. 76.8% of respondents considered it to be a good point to emphasize to hospital authorities the importance of low vision services;46.8% of respondents considered it to be a bad point that only ophthalmology services with full-time working ophthalmologists who finished the official course for low vision services are entitled to claim the new medical fee for low vision care. Conclusion:The majority of ophthalmologists tend to positive acceptance of the new medical fee for low vision care;nevertheless, a lot of problems remain to be discussed.
