Abstract. Purpose:To report the current status of low vision clinic at Inouye Eye Hospital in Tokyo. Cases and Method:This study was made on 42 patients who asked for advice at our low vision clinic during 12 months through September 2010. They were surveyed regarding age,causative lesion,visual acuity and field,and official status as visually disabled person. Results:The age ranged from 3 to 91 years,average 59 years. Visual disability was due to glaucoma in 21 cases,followed by retinitis pigmentosa in 7 cases,retinal dystrophy in 4 cases,degenerative myopia in 3 cases,diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration in 2 cases each,and retinal detachment in one case. Best corrected visual acuity averaged 0.2. Visual field was constricted to 10°or more in 21 cases(50%). Twenty-two cases were officially recognized as grade 1 or 2 of visual disability. Conclusion:The present survey was characterized by senile patients with advanced glaucoma. More than 50% of patients were visually handicapped to a severe degree.
