Abstract. Purpose:To compare the outcome of vitreous surgery using conventional and high-speed cutter. Cases:This study was made on consecutive 68 eyes that received vitreous surgery in the past 23 months. The series comprised proliferative diabetic retinopathy 25 eyes, epiretinal membrane 11 eyes, and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment 10 eyes among others. Initial 40 eyes were treated by conventional and the latter 28 eyes by high-speed cutter. Visual acuity was evaluated as logMAR. Results:Visual acuity averaged 1.02 in the conventional and 0.69 in high-speed group before surgery. It averaged 0.29 and 0.16 respectively after surgery. Duration of surgery averaged 83.8 and 74.2 minutes respectively. Iatrogenic retinal break developed in 5.0% and 3.6% of eyes respectively. Conclusion:There was no difference in outcome of vitreous surgery using conventional and high-speed cutter regarding postoperative visual acuity, duration of surgery or complications before and after surgery.
