  • Look Inside

We evaluated the outcome of vitreous surgery for 79 eyes of proliferative vitreoretinopathy during the foregoing 27 months. The retina was reattached in 61 eyes, 77%, after the initial surgery and in 74 eyes, 94%, after repeated surgeries. The failure of initial surgery was due to reproliferation with reopening of retinal breaks in 11 of 18 eyes. We irrigated the vitreous cavity with daunorubicin during surgery in 9 severe cases. This procedure apparently succeeded in 7 eyes. Final visual acuity was 0.1 or over in 46 eyes, 58%, and 0.05 or less in 26 eyes, 33%. The causes of poor final visual acuity of counting fingers or less were: failure of retinal reattachment 4 eyes, hypotonic maculopathy 3 eyes, and choroidal, retinal or optic atrophy 4 eyes.
