Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of conjunctival papilloma with positive findings for human papillomavirus(HPV)in the conjunctival smear by hybrid capture Ⅱ assay. Case:A 58-year-old male presented with slowly enlarging tumor in the right lower palpebral conjunctiva since 2 months before. Findings:Routine ophthalmologial findings were normal including corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure,slit-lamp microscopy and funduscopy. The right eye showed a vascularized, pedunculated tumor in the lower palpebral conjunctiva. The tumor was resected followed by cryocoagulation. Histopathology showed the tumor to be conjunctival papilloma. The tumor mass and conjunctival smear showed positive values for low-risk human papillomavirus by hybrid capture Ⅱ assay. Values were negative for high-risk human papillomavirus. There has been no recurrence for 12 months until present. Conclusion:This case illustrates that human papillomavirus may be causatively related with conjunctival papilloma and that hybrid capture Ⅱ assay may be useful in the diagnosis.
