Abstract. Conjunctival papilloma had recurred twice in the left lacrimal caruncle of a 20-year-old man in spite of resections. We applied in situ hybridization to the resected specimen in order to detect DNA of human papillomavirus(HPV). The superficial cells of the tumor showed positive reaction using wide-spectrum HPV probe. This case illustrates that recurrent or multiple conjunctival papilloma may be due to HPV infection. We advocate efforts to detect HPV in such cases. Careful surgical procedure is also necessary not to allow dissemination of infected tumor cells.
