Abstract. Purpose:To compare preservative-free ophthalmic solution of 0.5% timolol and 2% carteolol. Cases and Method:This prospective study was made on 23 eyes of 23 glaucoma patients. The series comprised 2 males and 21 females. The age ranged from 45 to 82 years, average 67 years. Twelve patients had primary open-angle and 11 had normal-tension glaucoma. All cases had been treated by carteolol and started receiving timolol instead. Intraocular pressure(IOP)was measured one and 3 months after switching. Patients were asked about subjective feeling one month after switching. Results:There was no significant difference in IOP before and after switching. Incidence of ocular dry feeling was less before switching to timolol and that of itching, foreign body sensation and difficulty in opening the bottle was less after switching. Side effect increased to 13% after switching. Conclusion:Timolol and carteolol showed similar hypotensive effect and safety in glaucoma patients.
