Abstract. Purpose:To report the effect of long-acting carteolol on eyes with normal-tension glaucoma. Cases and Method:This study was made on 37 eyes of 37 patients with normal-tension glaucoma. Each patient received 2% long-acting carteolol once a day up to 12 months. Visual field was evaluated by Humphrey perimeter before and 12 months after start of study. Results:Intraocular pressure(IOP)averaged 17.0±1.8 mmHg before and 14.6±2.0 mmHg 6 months after start of instillation. The difference was significant(p<0.0001). During 12 months of instillation,IOP decreased by 2.2 to 2.6 mmHg,or by 12.7 to 14.7%. There was no change in mean deviation of visual field before and after instillation. Treatment had to be discontinued in 2 cases(5.1%)due to adverse effects. Conclusion:Long-acting carteolol is effective and safe for normal-tension glaucoma.
