Abstract Purpose:We prospectively investigated intraocular pressure(IOP)lowering effect and safety of switching from latanoprost eye drops monotherapy to latanoprost/carteolol hydrochloride fixed combination eye drops(LCFC).

Subjects and Methods:Subjects were 26 patients(26 eyes)with primary open-angle glaucoma and secondary glaucoma who using latanoprost eye drops monotherapy and was insufficient in IOP lowering effect. The latanoprost eye drops were discontinued without any washout period and switched to LCFC. IOP, conjunctival hyperemia, corneal epithelial defects, tear film break-up time(TBUT), systemic blood pressure and pulse rate were compared between baseline and 1 and 3 months after switching. A patient questionnaire was administrated at 1 month after switching. Adverse reactions were investigated at every visit.

Results:Conjunctival hyperemia in 2 subjects was mild grade before switching and one of them was not differ after switching. IOP was 16.0±2.8 mmHg at baseline, 13.6±2.3 mmHg after 1 month, and 13.8±1.9 mmHg after 3 months. There was a significant reduction after switching. There were no changes in corneal epithelial defects or pulse rate. TBUT was significantly increased and systemic blood pressure was significantly decreased after switching. Two patients(7.7%)discontinued the study due to adverse reactions(sensation of pressure, nephelosia and epiphora).

Conclusions:Switching from latanoprost eye drops to LCFC reduced IOP with good adherence using a single administration, and safety.
