Abstract. Purpose:To report the characteristics of steroid responders. Cases and Method:Steroid responder was defined when intraocular pressure(IOP)rose by 5 mmHg or more and rose to 25 mmHg or more after topical or systemic use of corticosteroid. Seventeen patients were identified as such from clinical records. The series comprised 9 males and 8 females. The age ranged from 15 to 82 years, average 49 years. Results:The refraction averaged -3.58±2.72 diopters right and -3.50±2.58 diopters left. Interval between start of steroid treatment and peak of IOP was 9.8±13.5 months in systemic and 10.5±12.7 months in topical users. Peak of IOP averaged 31.7±5.3 mmHg in systemic and 40.6±13.7 mmHg in topical users. Rate of IOP rise averaged 143.0±103.1% in systemic and 154.1±100.9% in topical users. There was no significant difference between systemic and topical users in each item above. IOP rose in both eyes in systemic users and in treated eye only in topical users. Conclusion:IOP may be elevated not only by topical use but also by systemic use of corticosteroid, and should be monitored for a long time.
