Abstract. Purpose:To report morphological and functional changes of the retina in multiple evanescent white dot syndrome(MEWDS). Cases:This retrospective study was made on 13 cases of MEWDS. The series comprised 2 males and 11 females. The age ranged from 20 to 59 years, average 37 years. All were unilaterally affected. Findings:When examined with optical coherence tomography(OCT), the affected eyes showed blurring or absence of line between inner and outer segment of photoreceptors in the posterior fundus area. This finding was absent in the fellow unaffected eyes. All the affected eyes showed impaired visual acuity, visual field defect, and characteristic white dots in the retina. Ten cases showed abnormal visual field, multiple electroretinogram and abnormal findings by indocyanine green angiography in both eyes. Conclusion:Diffuse disruption of outer segment of retinal photoreceptor is a characteristic feature of MEWDS. Its dysfunction may also be present in unaffected fellow eyes.
