Abstract. Purpose:To report the correlation between visual field defect and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness(RNFLT)in glaucoma. Cases:This study was made on 120 eyes of 62 patients who were diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma in its broader sense. The series comprised 62 male and 58 female eyes. The age averaged 50.2±18.1 years. RNFLT was measured by optical coherence tomography(OCT3000). Visual field was evaluated by mean deviation(MD)and pattern standard deviation(PSD)of Humphrey automated perimeter. Results:RNFLT showed a significant correlation with MD(r=0.717, p=0.000)and PSD(r=-0.566, p=0.000). When glaucoma was classified into 3 groups according to MD value, correlation between RNFLT and MD was present only in early and advanced stages and was absent in medium stage. Conclusion:RNFLT in glaucoma is significantly correlated with visual field defect. This correlation may be less apparent in moderately advanced glaucoma.
