Abstract. Background:No definite concept has been established about sick house syndrome. Purpose:To clarify the allergic and causative relationship between allergic conjunctival diseases and sick house syndrome. Cases and Method:This study was made on 12 patients who had irritation of mucous membrane of the eye and who were diagnosed with sick house syndrome. The findings were compared with another series of 49 patients including allergic conjunctivitis 14 cases, atopic keratoconjunctivitis 14 cases, and vernal conjunctivitis 21 cases. Thirteen healthy persons served as control. Ocular manifestations were evaluated after converted into numerical scores. Results:Patients of sick house syndrome showed a tendency to milder conjunctival lesions and severer corneal manifestations. All of 2 children showed limbal as well as corneoconjunctival involvement. Patients of sick house syndrome showed significantly higher concentration of IL4 among cytokines in the tear fluid than in controls. Conclusion:Allergic responses are involved in ocular manifestations of sick house syndrome. Dissociation between conjunctival and corneal lesions suggest that sick house syndrome belongs to another entity from allergic conjunctival responses.
