We studied 54 eyes of 27 patients with glaucoma regarding the correlation between visual field loss and the thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer (NFL). The visual field was measured by central 30-2 program of Humphrey Field Analyzer using the mean deviation as parameter. A confocal scanning laser polarimeter, or Nerve Fiber Analyzer, was used to measure the thickness of peripapillary NFL. There was a significantly positive corelation between the interocular differences in NFL thickness and in mean deviation of visual field (n=27, r=0.45, p<0.02). When one eye each was randomly selected from each of the 27 patients, there was a significantly positive correlation between the NFL thickness and mean deviation (n=27, r =0.55, p<0.003). The findings show that the NFL thickness measured with the current method reflects the degree of visual field loss in glaucoma.
