We evaluated the con-elation between visual field defect and the cup/disk ratio or nerve fiber layer (NFL) thickness in 36 eyes of ocular hypertension or glaucoma. The optic disc was examined with a confocal laser topographic scanning method and with stereoscopic color photographs. The NFL thickness was measured by a scanning laser polarimeter. The correlation coefficient of the mean deviation of visual field and cup/disk ratio was -0.287 and -0.446 respectively. The mean deviation of visual field was not correlated to the total of NFL thickness (p = 0.1118). When the thickness of NFL was expressed as the subtraction value of NFL thickness between the superior or inferior hemisphere and that in the nasal sector (S-N or I-N) , both values showed good correlation (rs=0.657, p=0.0001). These new parameters promise to be of value in the diagnosis of glaucoma than the appearance of the optic nervehead.
