Abstract. We reviewed 5,502 eyes that underwent cataract day surgery with temporal small corneal incision in 14 institutions during a one-year period. Intraoperative complications developed in 63 eyes(1.15%). They comprised ruptured posterior capsule 58 eyes, dissected zonules 22 eyes, persistent lens material 5 eyes and posterior luxation of nucleus 2 eyes. There was no difference in the final visual acuity between the 63 eyes and the rest. Out of the 63 eyes,9 eyes needed additional measures including sulcus fixation of intraocular lens. These 9 eyes had risk factors including very hard nucleus or pseudoexfoliation. The findings show that cataract day surgery is relatively safe when properly performed. Eyes with multiple risk factors ought to be operated in well-equipped institutions.
