  • Look Inside

We reviewed a series of day surgery for cataract in 1,463 eyes during the foregoing 12 months. All the cases met our criteria for cataract as an outpatient basis. Systemic complications prior to surgery included hypertension 39.8%, diabetes mellitus 12%, cardiac diseases 15.6% and cerebral lesions 3.1%. There was no case which aggravated during or after surgery. Four eyes in 4 cases had been referred to us for vitrectomy because of complications during cataract surgery. They included exfoliation syndrome 2 eyes, hemodialysis 1 eye and 1 eye which had shown no problems before. The findings show that cataract eyes with fragile zonule ought to be operated under hospitalization with eventual vitreous surgery in mind.
