Abstract. Background:We compared atopic and age-related cataract regarding the content of fatty acid,gangliosides and myoinositol in an earlier study. Purpose:To report the content of slow-moving gangliosides sialyl Lewis X and Lewis X in atopic cataract. Material and Method:We analyzed two lenses with atopic cataract obtained by intracapsular cataract extraction. Both were males aged 55 and 58 years. Two lenses with age-related cataract served as control. Results:Lenses with atopic cataract showed increased sialic acid per protein unit. Thin-layer chromatography showed bands corresponding to sialyl Lewis X and Lewis X. Conclusion:Changes in sialyl Lewis X and Lewis X may induce altered adhesion among epithelial cells and fibrocytes and may manifest as atopic cataract.
