We performed cataract surgery on 10 eyes of pseudoexfoliation syndrome. We examined the surgically ob-tained exfoliated material and lens epithelium. The anterior capsule obtained from 10 eyes with senile cataract served as control. We used phase-contrast and scanning electron microscope for morphological studies. There was no signifi-cant difference in the size of lens epithelial cells between the two groups. There was no difference between the two groups regarding the composition of fatty acids in the lens epithelium by gas chromatography. This finding seemed to show that the lens epithelium is not injured by the exfoliated material. Thin-layer chromatography showed the pres-ence of Sialyl-Lewis X in the exfoliated material. This substance, which is known to be a cell-adhesion molecule, seemed to facilitate the adhesion of exfoliated material to intraocular tissues.
