Abstract. Background:Various gangliosides are involved in the cell proliferation that causes posterior capsular opacity after cataract surgery with intraocular lens(IOL) implantation. Purpose:To report the relation between the size of anterior capsulorrhexis and the amount of gangliosides after cultivation of pig lens implanted with IOL. Material and Method:Pig eyes were implanted with IOL after removing lens nucleus and cortex. The IOL was made of PMMA and had optics of 6.0mm in diameter. Diameter of capsulorrhexis was set at 5.0mm or 6.5mm. The lens was removed together with IOL and was cultivated. After 1 or 2 weeks, gangliosides were extracted and quantitated by chromatography. A total of 60 eyes were used consisting of 6 groups of 10 eyes each. Results:Content of GM1 and GM3 was significantly greater 6.5mm group than 5mm group. That of sialyl-Lewis X was significantly greater in 5.0mm group than 6.5mm group. Conclusion:Migration and proliferation of lens epithelial cells are more active when the diameter of anterior capsulorrhexis is larger than that of IOL optics.
