Abstract. Purpose:To report the bacterial flora in the conjunctival sac before cataract surgery. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 324 eyes of 219 patients scheduled for cataract surgery. The series comprised 117 male and 207 female eyes. The age ranged from 53 to 92 years, average 74 years. Scrapings from lower palpebral conjunctiva were cultured and examined. Results:Bacterial organisms were isolated from 77 eyes(23.8%)comprising 84 strains. They included 40 gram-positive strains(47.6%)and 34 gram-negative ones(40.5%). The majority of them were sensitive to commonly used antibiotics. Conclusion:The findings illustrate the importance of examining the bacterial flora before cataract surgery as a guide in prevention or treatment whenever needed.
