Abstract. We measured the power of accommodation after lens-preserving vitreous surgery in 10 eyes of 10 patients. The series comprised 8 eyes of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and 2 eyes of diabetic retinopathy. Their age ranged from 28 to 41 years, average 36 years. The nuclear cataract was graded as G0 in 5 eyes and G1 in 5 eyes after Emery Little classification. Power of accommodation was measured using an polyaccommodometer. There was no progression in lens opacity during the follow-up period averaging 7.1 months after surgery. The postoperative power of accommodation averaged 7.6±3.7 diopters in operated eyes and 10.9±5.4 diopters in fellow eyes. The findings show that power of accommodation is preserved after vitreous surgery by short-term observation.
