We designed a hand-held retinal projection system as an aid to visually handicapped persons. We compared the system with a face-mounted video display using a closed circuit television system. Thirteen low-vision persons participated in the study. Their ages ranged from 57 to 82 years, average 70 years. Their best corrected visual acuity ranged from 0.01 to 0.3,average 0.04. They were asked to read characters with these two devices for 20 seconds. The correctly read characters were then counted. The size of characters were gradually made smaller, starting from 400 down to 28 point-sizes. The maximum reading speed was almost the same for the two devices. The critical point sizes were smaller with the retinal projection system than with face-mounted video display. The findigns show the feasibility of our new system as a low-vision aid.
