Purpose:To report the outcome of vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy with iris or angle rubeosis. Cases and Method:This retrospective study involved 48 eyes that received primary vitrectomy during a 5-year period. All the eyes had proliferative diabetic retinopathy and rubeosis of iris or chamber angle. Elevation of intraocular pressure(IOP)was absent in 30 eyes and present in 18 eyes. All the eyes received panphotocoagulation during surgery. Results:At the final examination,IOP was elevated over 21 mmHg in 3 of 30 eyes(10%)and in 8 of 18 eyes(44%). Final visual acuity was 0.1 or over in 13 of 30 eyes(43%)and in 5 of 18 eyes(28%). Conclusion:Vitrectomy for diabetic retinopathy with iris or angle rubeosis is to be performed before IOP elevation has set in.
