  • Look Inside

Purpose:To discuss the role of ophthalmologists in the low vision care of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. Cases:This retrospective study involved 6 male patients of the disease seen during the past 5 years. One patient was aged 47 years. The others were aged 24 years or less. They visited us 6 months to 7 years after onset of the disease. Results:The patients had not been told that the condition was incurable. They therefore had a strong desire to be cured. We informed the patients about the nature of the disease and about the necessity to make best use of the remaining vision. Conclusion:Ophthalmologists ought to inform the patients about the nature of the disease and motivate them to start low vision care and to improve the quality of life.
