  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The present case was a 17-year-old girl without hereditary factors. At the age of 13, the patient fell ill with absence. Grand mal seizures, myoclonus, cerebellar symptoms, transient hallucinatory paranoid state and dementia appeared gradually. The patient died after about 4 years and a half from the onset.

Pathohistologically the Lafora-body was found in all areas of the brain, especially in the substantia nigra, the nucleus dentata cerebelli and Golgi's cells within the granular layer. While there were generally many findings of the early stage, findings of the terminal stage were very few.

The degenerative substance was not found in the heart muscle and liver cells.

Histochemical investigation was carried out on the Lafora-bodies in nerve cells. Acid mucopolysaccharides and nucleoproteins were confirmed in the Lafora-body except for the center where basophil mucopolysaccha-rides were proved.
